Descrizione

Distribuzione e habitat

Il genere è diffuso nell'mwfgAmerica tropicale e subtropicale, nell'mwfwAfrica subsahariana, in mwgaMadagascar e nelle mwgqisole Comore, nella mwggPenisola Arabica, in mwgwIndia e mwhaSri Lankacite-ref-powo-1-1[1].

Tassonomia

Il genere comprende oltre 170 specie tra cui:cite-ref-powo-1-2[1]

Tossicità

Come molti altri rappresentanti della famiglia delle mwrgEuforbiacee le piante di mwrwJatropha contengono numerosi composti tossici, compresi mwsalectina, mwsqforbolo, mwsgcancerogeni ed inibitori della mwswtripsina. I semi di questo genere sono anche fonte di una tossialbumina, la curcina, altamente tossicacite-ref-2[2]. La sua linfa è irritante per la pelle e l'ingestione anche di solo tre semi non trattati può essere fatale per l'uomo.

Nel 2005 l'mwuwAustralia Occidentale ha messo al bando la mwvaJatropha gossypiifolia come invasiva e altamente tossica per persone e animalicite-ref-3[3].
